Russian film director Andrey Zvyagintsev has stepped down from his country’s Oscar committee in the wake of the news that the Russian Film Academy will not nominate a film to the upcoming Oscars competition, he told Meduza.
The Russian Academy announced its decision not to submit a film to the awards show on September 26, giving no explanation for the withdrawal. The following day, Russian Oscar committee head Pavel Chukhrai resigned from the board, as did multiple other members. Chukhrai said the Russian Academy had neither consulted nor notified the Russian Oscar committee about the decision.
