Russia reports new pandemic record for daily coronavirus deaths

Russia recorded 828 coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24 hours, marking a new pandemic record, the government’s anti-coronavirus headquarters reported on Friday, September 24.

The previous record for the highest number of daily deaths since the start of the pandemic was matched a day earlier, when health authorities recorded 820 coronavirus-related fatalities. (The country recorded this same number of deaths on August 26).

According to the anti-coronavirus headquarters, 202,273 people in Russia have died due to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

The anti-coronavirus headquarters said on Friday that 21,379 new coronavirus cases had been identified in the past 24 hours, a slight decrease from the 21,438 new cases recorded on Thursday. Most of the new cases reported on Friday were identified in Moscow (2,893), St. Petersburg (1,874), and the Moscow region (1,008).

The health authorities also reported 15,828 recoveries in the last 24 hours.

According to Meduza’s sources, the Moscow Mayor’s Office held a meeting about the fourth coronavirus wave on September 22. Reportedly, the city’s leadership discussed the possibility of tighter public health restrictions, such as transferring companies to remote work, requiring QR codes for visiting cafes, and mandatory self-isolation for the elderly and people with chronic illnesses. 

In total, Russia has recorded more than 7.3 million coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic.
