Russia won’t intervene in conflict between Taliban and resistance fighters, says Kremlin spokesman

Commenting on recent reports of conflict between the Taliban and resistance forces in Afghanistan’s Panjshir region, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists that Russia has no plans to intervene.

“At today’s early Collective Security Treaty Organization session this possibility was mentioned from the standpoint [that] it is potentially fraught with another civil war in Afghanistan and additional risks and threats. Of course, there is no intention to interfere in these events,” Peskov said on Monday, August 23.

The Kremlin spokesman also noted that Russia has no intentions of getting involved either militarily or diplomatically. Asked if Moscow would act as a “go-between” Peskov said, “No, this is not on the agenda.”

Against the backdrop of the U.S. military withdrawing from Afghanistan, nearly the entire country’s territory has fallen to the Taliban. On August 15, the militant group seized control of the capital, Kabul, after which Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled the country.

In Afghanistan’s Panjshir region, Ahmad Massoud — the son of the well-known Afghan resistance fighter Ahmad Shah Massoud — and Amrullah Saleh — the vice president of the ousted Afghan government — have announced the formation of a resistance group, which includes Afghan army detachments that refused to cooperate with the Taliban. The Taliban has issued an ultimatum demanding that Massound surrender areas under his control.
