‘You will always be my hero’ Navalny’s daughter shares farewell message

On March 1, Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny was buried in Moscow. Thousands of mourners showed up for his funeral, despite a heavy police presence and repeated attempt by the Russian authorities to prevent a public ceremony from occurring at all. Navalny’s widow, daughter, and son all live outside of Russia and were unable to attend the funeral. Navalny’s daughter, Dasha, shared a farewell message on Instagram.

Everyone says “my parents are my role models.” Although, in my case, it’s true.

Dad, you were an example for many around the world. Your optimism and infectious, sincere smile. Your curiosity and thirst for new knowledge. Your remarkable ability to connect with anyone. Wit. Sense of humor. Resilience. Ability to find the right words at the right time (or a joke to lighten the mood during a difficult situation). Your kindness. Faith in goodness, in yourself, in people. Since childhood, you have taught me to live by principles. To live with dignity. You gave your life for me, for mom, for Zakhar, for Russia, and I promise you that I will live my life the way you taught me, so that you will be proud of me, and most importantly, with just as bright of a smile on my face.

You have always been and will always be an example for me. My hero. My dad.

I love you very much. Rest in peace.
