Residents of Transnistria, a breakaway republic within Moldova’s internationally recognized borders, have filed more than 60,000 applications for Russian citizenship under a simplified procedure over the past three months, Vadim Krasnoselsky, the head of the self-proclaimed republic, told the pro-Kremlin outlet Izvestia.

But Transnistria residents are now facing a new complication, he said: Russian authorities recently raised the fee for obtaining Russian citizenship and renouncing it, and starting August 1, applicants at consular offices outside Russia will have to pay $600 instead of the previous $65.

Vladimir Putin signed the decree simplifying the citizenship process for Transnistria residents in mid-May. The decree exempts them from a number of requirements under Russia’s federal law on citizenship — including permanent residency in Russia, Russian language proficiency, and knowledge of Russian history and the basics of Russian legislation.

About half a million people currently live in Transnistria, Izvestia said, and 220,000 of them already hold Russian citizenship.

The unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic in northeastern Moldova was proclaimed in 1990. Its independence is recognized only by the partially recognized states of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
