How bad is Russia’s fuel crisis? Diesel just had its worst week since 2022.
Gasoline prices in Russia rose 2.1 percent in the week of June 30 through July 6, while diesel fuel climbed 3.4 percent, according to the latest weekly data from Rosstat, Russia’s state statistics service.
Average consumer gasoline prices stood at 74.01 rubles per liter. AI-92 gasoline sold for 70.21 rubles per liter, AI-95 for 76.19 rubles, and AI-98 and above for 98.04 rubles. Diesel averaged 87.76 rubles per liter nationwide.
The weekly increase in diesel prices was the largest since 2022, The Bell reported, citing Rosstat’s data. The outlet also noted that this time, Rosstat did not specify which region saw the sharpest price increases. The previous week, it was Sevastopol, where gasoline prices rose 30 percent.
The week before that, June 23 through June 29, gasoline prices rose 1.6 percent and diesel 2.2 percent, according to Rosstat.
Russia has been grappling with a widening fuel crisis since early June, with shortages spreading to a growing number of regions. In late June, Vladimir Putin acknowledged for the first time that there were lines at gas stations and that the right grade of gasoline could “not always” be found, though he assured the public that Russia had reserves. On July 8, Putin held another meeting on the fuel crisis, where he said the problems were temporary and stemmed in part from strikes on Russian oil refineries by Ukraine, which he said was seeking to disrupt the summer vacation season.
