Former investigative journalist Ivan Safronov stands accused of passing classified information to Czech intelligence, stated his lawyer Ivan Pavlov from the human rights organization “Team 29.”
According to the investigation, Safronov was recruited in 2012 and in 2017, transmitted secret information about Russia’s military cooperation with Middle Eastern and African countries via the Internet.
According to the prosecution, the Czech Republic’s intelligence agencies were acting under the leadership of the United States.
Safronov himself maintains that the case against him is linked to his journalistic activities and denies any guilt.
Following his arrest on the morning of July 7, Ivan Safronov was sentenced to two months in jail on accusations of treason. The FSB plans to announce the official charges against him on July 13th.
