Museum honoring murdered Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya to close as independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta shuts down

The Anna Politkovskaya Museum is the office at Novaya Gazeta where the journalist worked before she was murdered in 2006. The room housed Politkovskaya’s computer, letters addressed to her and sent to the newspaper, personal belongings, and a reconstructed memorial plaque from the building on Lesnaya Street where she was shot dead (the original plaque was smashed). This photo was taken in 2021, when Novaya Gazeta first opened the museum. On October 30, Novaya Gazeta <a href="https://meduza.io/en/feature/2026/10/30/they-killed-us-russian-independent-newspaper-novaya-gazeta-announces-its-closure-after-decades-of-repression" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">said</a> it was shutting down after being evicted from the building where its newsroom had operated for decades. The Politkovskaya Museum will close along with the newspaper.
