Belgrade erupts in celebration after Serbia’s student-led opposition defeats Aleksandar Vučić

Serbia held snap parliamentary elections on October 25, after former President Aleksandar Vučić dissolved parliament and resigned in September. Vučić had hoped to remain in power by moving from the presidency to the prime minister’s office. But his Serbian Progressive Party lost to the “Student List” movement, which grew out of protests that began in 2024 after a canopy collapsed at a train station in Novi Sad, killing 16 people. The movement was formally registered just over a month ago, but that did not stop it from winning 52% of the vote, according to preliminary estimates. Voter turnout reached a record high.
