The Russian language reference website Gramota.ru has named “vibe” (вайб) its 2024 Word of the Year. The site’s other two finalists were “skuf” (скуф, pronounced “skoof”), which originated online and refers to “an unkempt man over 35 with a beer belly, conservative views, and a dead-end job,” and “prilyot” (прилёт), meaning “arrival by air.” While “prilyot” is primarily used to refer to arrivals at an airport, it’s also used in military jargon to refer to incoming artillery and air strikes. Gramota’s Word of the Year is determined by a vote of linguists from various cities throughout Russia.
