Protesters tear down Nazarbayev monument in Kazakhstan

Protesters in the city of Taldykorgan tore down a monument to Kazakhstan’s first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, on Wednesday, January 5. This happened shortly after President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced in a nationwide address that he has removed Nazarbayev from his lifetime post as chairman of the nation’s Security Council. Nazarbayev has yet to speak publicly about mass protests against suddenly doubled fuel prices.
