Serebrennikov also received the award for Best Director for his staging of “Little Tragedies.” Eight days before the Golden Mask awards ceremony, Serebrennikov was released after nearly two years under house arrest. He is the best-known defendant in the “Seventh Studio” <a href="https://meduza.io/en/feature/2019/04/12/our-claim-that-masliayeva-doesn-t-tell-the-truth-has-been-confirmed" target="_blank">embezzlement case</a>, which his supporters say is politically motivated.
