Russian strikes trigger emergency power outages in several Ukrainian regions, cutting water supply across Kyiv
One of Russia’s largest attacks on Ukraine’s energy system has been underway since the early hours of November 3, national power company Ukrenergo reported.
Russian forces struck Ukrainian energy facilities more than 20 times over the past 24 hours, causing significant damage to energy infrastructure, the company said.
Emergency power outages are in effect in several parts of the country, including Kyiv. In some regions, customers may be without power for more than 12 hours. These are the first outages on this scale this fall, the news outlet Ukrainska Pravda reported.
The Sumy and Poltava regions have introduced a special emergency outage schedule. There is no precise estimate of how long customers will be without power.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the city faces severe problems with its power supply. Russian attacks damaged facilities in the Kyiv regional power hub, he said. Warming centers have been set up in the districts hardest hit by the outages.
The outages have disrupted the city’s electric public transit and caused water supply problems. Kyivvodokanal, the city’s water utility, said the water supply had been temporarily shut off across the city.
