Russia’s human rights commissioner says humanitarian mission in occupied Oleshky is wrapping up
Russia’s human rights commissioner, Yana Lantratova, said the humanitarian mission in the city of Oleshky is coming to an end.
“We are finishing our humanitarian mission in Oleshky. We’re already in Armiansk now. We’re getting people seated into the convoys [of buses],” Lantratova said.
The convoy carrying Oleshky residents who chose to evacuate is headed to Russia and Ukraine, she said. Davyd Arakhamia, head of the Servant of the People faction in the Verkhovna Rada, said earlier that the Ukrainian delegation, along with some of those evacuated from Oleshky, traveled to Anapa and is expected to fly from there to Belarus and then on to Ukraine.
Lantratova said the humanitarian mission went off “without any incidents”:
Thanks to our troops, who made all of this possible. A huge convoy: 25 buses, nine ambulances, buses for bedridden people. We managed to do everything. I thank the first lady [of the U.S., Melania Trump], and I thank everyone who took part in this effort.
The city of Oleshky sits in the part of the Kherson region occupied by Russian forces, where the war has caused a humanitarian catastrophe.
Russia and Ukraine agreed to halt fighting in Oleshky for the humanitarian mission, with U.S. first lady Melania Trump mediating.
The truce began on the morning of October 27 and will remain in effect until late in the evening of November 1. Neither side has reported any violations. Arakhamia called the truce in Oleshky “the biggest de-escalation since 2022.”
