Teenager shot dead after knife attack near Israeli embassy in Belgrade

A teenager armed with two knives attacked a gendarmerie officer guarding a facility in front of the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade, shouting “God is greatest.”

The officer fought back and killed the attacker. Authorities raised the terrorism alert level to red, which means increased policing nationwide.

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic confirmed the attack, which took place at 12:15 a.m. on October 28. The officer suffered minor injuries.

Dacic said security services had been monitoring the attacker, who was believed to be a supporter of the Islamic State group.

The attack came a day after Israel held parliamentary elections on October 27. Votes are still being counted. Exit polls show the opposition bloc led by former military chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot narrowly ahead of incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc.
