‘It doesn’t always need to be said out loud’: European leaders to ask Zelensky to tone down criticism of Trump, FT reports
European Union leaders plan to urge Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to tone down his public criticism of Donald Trump, the Financial Times reported, citing sources.
The EU fears that Zelensky’s increasingly sharp remarks about Trump could further strain the already tense relations between Washington and Kyiv.
“It might be true, but it doesn’t always need to be said out loud,” one of the Financial Times’ sources said.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Zelensky criticized Trump’s diesel deal with Russia, condemned the U.S. decision to stop sharing intelligence, and said the American president sympathizes with autocrats and very wealthy people: “He [Trump] speaks about it openly and loudly that he loves such people and he respects such people. Because for him people who can be leaders 20 years, 30 years, 40 years, it means they can be very strong.”
Zelensky said that although Ukraine has stopped striking oil refineries, it has still received no American warnings about Russian ballistic missile attacks. He also said Starlink terminal service had been restricted, and rejected the suggestion that the problems were caused by any malfunction. “It was not a technical problem, it was the will,” he said.
