Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder visits Moscow and meets Globus employees after becoming head of the hypermarket chain’s supervisory board
Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder has arrived in Moscow and met with employees of the Globus hypermarket chain, RBC reported.
Sources told RBC that Schröder gave a welcome address before leaving to speak with employees “behind closed doors.” His itinerary also includes a visit to one of the chain’s hypermarkets.
Globus is one of the few foreign retailers that continued operating in Russia after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. The chain has more than 20 stores across eight Russian regions and still has German shareholders.
In early October, it emerged that Schröder had joined the supervisory board of Giperglobus LLC. The company’s owner, Thomas Bruch, said Schröder was appointed for his many years of experience in Russian politics and business.
In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin placed the assets of other major foreign retailers still operating in Russia — Metro Cash & Carry, Auchan, and Lemana PRO (Leroy Merlin) — under the temporary management of Russian companies. Nestlé Russia was also placed under temporary management.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, Schröder has visited Russia several times and met with Putin.
