Unidentified drones attacked two merchant ships off Bulgaria’s coast, the country’s prime minister, Rumen Radev, said.
The crew of the first ship was evacuated. The second ship sank after the attack, and the fate of its crew remains unclear.
The attack took place about 110 kilometers (68 miles) off Bulgaria’s coast, within the country’s exclusive economic zone. Reuters reported that it was the first known drone attack on civilian ships in Bulgarian waters since the war between Russia and Ukraine began.
It remains unclear whose drones were involved. A source told Reuters that, according to a preliminary assessment, Russia was likely behind the attack.
