Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin will retire from the NHL at the end of the current season. He told his teammates about his decision.

“It’s sad. But it is what it is,” the Russian hockey player said. “Times fly. […] It seems like yesterday I was here, my first year, and right now this is my 22nd year. And, you know, it goes like this [snaps].”

Ovechkin, 41, has spent his entire NHL career with the Washington Capitals and has been the team’s captain since 2010. In 2018, the Capitals won the Stanley Cup for the first and only time in franchise history, and Ovechkin was named the playoffs’ most valuable player.

Ovechkin holds the record for regular-season goals in the NHL’s more than 100-year history, with 929. He ranks 10th in career points, with 1,688 in 1,575 games.
