Russian guard and inmate killed aboard train carrying prisoners. Reports conflict over alleged riot.
A prisoner being transferred attacked his guards aboard a Vladikavkaz–Adler train in Kabardino-Balkaria, RBC, Interfax, and TASS reported, citing law enforcement sources.
The sources said the prisoner grabbed a guard’s weapon while being escorted to the bathroom and opened fire on officers from Russia’s prison service, the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN). One officer later died on the way to the hospital, and three others were wounded.
The guards killed the prisoner when they returned fire, the sources said.
REN TV and the Telegram channel 112 initially reported that prisoners had rioted on the train. Sources cited by both outlets said the prisoners had killed one guard and taken three wounded guards hostage.
Later, an FSIN source told TASS that the reports of a riot were “not true.”
There were 15 prisoners in the railcar, Mash reported.
