Bipartisan group of 14 U.S. senators urges Trump to withdraw Putin’s G20 invitation

A bipartisan group of 14 U.S. senators has urged President Donald Trump to withdraw his invitation to Vladimir Putin for the G20 summit in Miami this December, The Washington Post reported.

In a letter, the senators said Putin bears sole responsibility for Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.

“Allowing him to participate in a G20 Summit in the United States raises serious concerns about legitimizing and normalizing a government that continues to attack Ukrainian civilian targets every day,” the senators said in the letter.

The senators said Putin would have little incentive to agree to a ceasefire unless he was isolated from the international community.

Republican Senator Roger Wicker and Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen led the effort. Six other Democrats and six other Republicans signed the letter.

On September 23, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. had invited Putin to the G20 summit in Miami. The Kremlin said it was grateful for the invitation but had not yet decided whether Putin would travel to the U.S.

In late August, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov attended a meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors for the first time since the war began. The Trump administration decided to include Russia in the meeting. European delegations protested Siluanov’s attendance.
