Russian biathlete and two-time Olympic champion Sergei Tchepikov dies
Sergei Tchepikov, a Russian biathlete, has died at 59, according to Sergei Averyanov, a representative of the Russian Biathlon Union.
Tchepikov won Olympic gold in the relay in 1988 and in the sprint in 1994, and he was a two-time world champion, winning the team race in 1989 and the mixed relay in 2006. He carried the Russian flag at the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer.
Tchepikov joined United Russia in 2006 and was elected to the Sverdlovsk region’s legislative assembly in 2008. He had served as a deputy in the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, since 2016.
He came under sanctions from the European Union, the United States, and other Western countries after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
