Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced it detained an employee of the organization responsible for guarding the British embassy in Moscow and charged him under Article 275 of Russia’s Criminal Code, which covers treason.
The FSB reported the man had gathered information on embassy staff, including their addresses and details of their meetings and trips, and had studied the diplomatic mission’s security system and the events held there.
FSB officers claim the guard was acting on behalf of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), receiving his assignments from Ukrainian blogger Dmytro Karpenko, known as “Apostol” (“Apostle”).
The FSB claimed the SBU allegedly intended to use the information to plan acts of sabotage and terrorist attacks against the British ambassador and other diplomats, and planned to pin responsibility for the attacks on Moscow. According to the FSB, this would have drawn Britain into direct armed conflict with Russia and allowed Ukraine to obtain additional weapons.
London police announced the arrest of British resident Joshua Cammidge the day before, accusing him of violating the National Security Act and suspecting him of cooperating with Russian intelligence.
