The search and the resulting investigation were tied to the detention of Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander of the Ukrainian unit known as the Russian Volunteer Corps. He was suspected of working for the FSB and of plotting to assassinate “one of the leaders of the Russian opposition movement,” who was expected to travel to Kyiv.
