A Moscow resident attacked worshippers at the Church of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women in Moscow’s Maryino district, Russian media reported.
According to the newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets, the 29-year-old attacker was a member of the congregation who “typically behaved calmly.” It reported that on the morning of September 1, he burst onto the church grounds, began throwing rocks, then grabbed a shovel and struck an ambulance paramedic — who had been called to treat him — in the head.
The Telegram channel “112,” which has ties to security forces, reported that the ambulance had been called because the man was experiencing hallucinations and “hearing voices.” A passerby shot him after he struck the paramedic with the shovel, and he died as a result.
The passerby shot the man with a less-lethal pistol, according to the Russian security services-linked Telegram channel Mash. He was later detained. The paramedic is in intensive care in serious condition. Mikhail Sergeyev, the church’s rector, confirmed to the Russian security services-linked Telegram channel Baza that the passerby had opened fire with a less-lethal pistol.
