U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, according to Fox Business correspondent Edward Lawrence, NBC correspondent Julie Tsirkin, and CNBC correspondent Megan Cassella.
The meeting took place in Asheville, North Carolina, at a summit of finance ministers and central bank governors from the Group of 20 (G20).
According to Lawrence, Bessent and Siluanov discussed U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. Sources told Tsirkin that the men also discussed economic cooperation between their countries.
The New York Times said that Siluanov’s participation in the summit prompted objections from European governments. German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil and his counterparts from across Europe threatened to boycott the ministers’ traditional group photo if Siluanov took part. In the end, the newspaper said, Siluanov did not appear in the group photo.
It is the first time Siluanov has attended a G20 meeting in person since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. U.S. officials gave no advance notice.
