A Moscow court has jailed the son of Moscow State University associate professor Anna Kameneva, who was found dead with a cut to her neck. He is charged with murdering his mother.

A law enforcement source told the Russian state news agency TASS that Moscow’s Tverskoy Court has ordered the pretrial detention of the son of Anna Kameneva, an associate professor at Moscow State University’s Higher School of State Audit. He has been charged with murdering his mother.

News of Kameneva’s death emerged on August 26. Her body was found with a cut to her neck at a house in Zhukovka, a village outside Moscow, the newspaper Izvestia said. Shell casings and a nonlethal handgun that fires rubber bullets were also found at the scene. Moscow State University’s press office later confirmed her death.

Sources previously told the tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda that the main suspect in the killing was a close friend of Kameneva’s son. The 18-year-old fled the scene and is being sought. Komsomolskaya Pravda said the motive may have been connected to the family’s money.

Kameneva had worked in the Higher School of State Audit’s economic and financial investigations department since 2011. She was married to Gadzhi Makhachev, a former member of Russia’s State Duma — the lower house of parliament — and a former deputy prime minister of Dagestan. Makhachev died in a car crash on Moscow’s Kutuzovsky Prospekt in 2013.
