Russia attacks Ukraine-Moldova border checkpoint for second night in a row

Russia struck Ukraine’s Odesa region with drones overnight on August 21, hitting the Tabaky international checkpoint on the border with Moldova, Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service reported.

The attack damaged the checkpoint’s buildings and structures, forcing it to close. Traffic is now being redirected to other border crossings.

It’s the second attack on a border checkpoint in the past 24 hours. The day before, amid a massive strike on Kyiv, Russian forces also struck a border checkpoint on the border with Moldova in the Odesa region, among other targets, Volodymyr Zelensky said. Foreign Ministry head Andrii Sybiha added that these are “not isolated incidents,” saying Russia “is increasingly testing the resolve of NATO and its partners by violating the sovereignty of neighboring countries.”

Moldova’s Defense Ministry reported that a drone entered the country’s airspace overnight on August 20, amid the strikes on Ukraine. Preliminary data indicate it was a Shahed-136, the Russian modification known as Geran-2.
