Russian strike on Kyiv kills 12, injures more than 30
Russian forces struck Kyiv with ballistic missiles overnight on August 20, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
As of 8:15 a.m. local time, the attack had killed 12 people and injured 33, according to data cited by Klitschko.
Klitschko declared August 21 a day of mourning in Kyiv.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported that the strikes hit an industrial facility in the Sviatoshynskyi district, sparking fires at three warehouses.
In the Solomianskyi district, the strike destroyed the upper floors of an apartment building and sparked a fire there, blew out windows in nearby residential buildings and a medical facility, and set cars, garages, and a store ablaze. In the Darnytskyi district, the attack hit a non-residential building, setting warehouses and vehicles on fire.
Kyiv region administration head Tymur Tkachenko said the attack killed a man in the Brovarskyi district and damaged an industrial facility.
Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that Russian forces targeted defense industry enterprises, a transport and logistics center, and warehouses in Kyiv and the Kyiv region. The ministry claimed the strikes hit the Fire Point plant, which produces drone components; a trade and warehouse complex used to manufacture drone components; an aircraft industry assembly plant; the Antonov plant, which produces drones; and an ammunition depot.
