Poland detains Ukrainian suspected of trying to assassinate a Ukrainian defense industry official on Russia’s orders
Serhiy P., a 63-year-old Ukrainian citizen, was detained in Warsaw on suspicion of plotting to assassinate an unnamed representative of Ukraine’s defense industry.
Poland’s Internal Security Agency apprehended the suspect as early as August 5 but only announced the arrest now.
According to Polish authorities, the failed assassination attempt took place in Irpin, in the Kyiv region, where Serhiy P. planted a homemade explosive device under the intended victim’s car before fleeing to Poland. The device was meant to be detonated remotely, but a malfunction in the mechanism prevented the explosion.
Investigators believe he was acting on orders from Russian intelligence services. A Warsaw court ordered his arrest on charges of attempted murder using explosives he had obtained illegally.
This marks the second known case in the past week of Poland apprehending someone recruited by Russian intelligence services. On August 13, Polish authorities detained a Russian citizen on suspicion of plotting to murder a U.S.-Ukrainian citizen. Polish media reports say the suspect, a native of Donbas, had been planning an assassination attempt against Ukrainian rapper Albert Vasyliev (Kyivstoner), who in Russia has been accused of organizing a massive drone attack on a strategic facility in the Moscow region.
