Moscow’s Nikulinsky District Court fined Russian politician Boris Nadezhdin 10,000 rubles on a charge of participating in the activities of an “undesirable” organization (Article 20.33 of Russia’s Administrative Offenses Code).
The charge stemmed from an interview Nadezhdin gave to Meduza, which Russian authorities have designated an “undesirable” organization; it was published July 14.
News of the charge came a day after Nadezhdin announced he had left Russia.
Boris Nadezhdin had planned to run as an independent candidate in elections to the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, scheduled for September. Soon after he began collecting signatures in his support, Russia’s Justice Ministry designated him a “foreign agent.” In mid-July, Nadezhdin was fined under an administrative statute for displaying “extremist symbols” over a photo of Alexey Navalny. The “foreign agent” designation and the fine barred him from running in the election. Amid this situation, the politician left Russia.
