Russia’s Foreign Ministry stated it “sees no grounds” for a mutual truce with Ukraine in the Black Sea.
Maria Zakharova, the ministry’s spokesperson, made the statement in response to a question: “Has the Russian side received Turkey’s proposal to introduce a moratorium on military action in the Black Sea, and is it ready to consider this option?”
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called on Russia and Ukraine on August 8 to establish a mechanism for declaring a Black Sea cease-fire, in an interview with the Anadolu news agency. Referencing Fidan’s proposal, Zakharova said Russia regularly faces “brazen acts of terrorism carried out by Ukrainian military drones” against civilian vessels.
“At the same time, we see no signs of improvement in the situation, and therefore no grounds for half-measures that only give the Kyiv regime a temporary respite,” Zakharova said.
The Reuters news agency reported the day before that Ukraine had proposed a mutual halt to strikes on civilian targets in the Black Sea. According to the news agency’s sources, Kyiv passed the proposal to Moscow through an intermediary and has not yet received a response.
