Russia’s nationalist Rodina party demands anti-war Yabloko party be pulled from State Duma race
Russia’s Rodina party has filed a lawsuit with the country’s Supreme Court seeking to remove Yabloko from the ballot, Rodina leader and sitting State Duma deputy Alexey Zhuravlev told the Russian state news agency TASS.
The Supreme Court’s press service confirmed to TASS and the Russian business daily Kommersant that the lawsuit had indeed been filed.
Russia’s Central Election Commission registered Yabloko’s candidate list on July 29 for the fall elections to the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament. During the registration proceedings, as Yabloko representatives spoke, Alexey Zhuravlev accused the party of fielding candidates who had never once traveled to the ”SVO” zone. Sergey Mironov, head of the A Just Russia party, and Leonid Slutsky, head of the LDPR, joined in criticizing Yabloko, and Slutsky called for the party to be declared an “undesirable organization.”
Russia’s opposition in exile, by contrast, urged voters to back Yabloko in this election. Yulia Navalnaya made such a statement, and Ilya Yashin, Vladimir Kara-Murza, Lyubov Sobol, Maxim Reznik, Oleg Orlov, and other opposition figures also voiced support for Yabloko.
