Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in the United States, he announced on his Telegram channel.
During the trip, Zelensky plans to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump and attend a memorial service for U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, who died on July 11.
Zelensky said he intends to discuss strengthening missile defense and a strategic partnership with the United States in talks with Trump and his team.
Trump reportedly plans to discuss ending the war between Russia and Ukraine with Zelensky. All senators have also been invited to the talks with the Ukrainian president, which come as Congress considers a bill imposing sanctions on Russia.
The meeting between Trump and Zelensky is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Moscow time.
Ukrainian and American officials discussed a proposal for an air ceasefire during Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the United States, according to sources who spoke to the Reuters news agency. They plan to present the proposal to Russia as part of a new round of peace initiatives aimed at ending the Russia–Ukraine war.
Kyiv has previously offered Vladimir Putin ceasefire proposals, but he has rejected them. Some officials believe that continued Ukrainian attacks on Russia’s economy could pressure Putin into softening his stance.
