Viktor Yanukovych fled Ukraine in disgrace in 2014. A new investigation says he now lives in Sochi — under his mother’s maiden name.

Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych is now living in Sochi and using documents in the name of “Oleg Nikolayevich Leonov,” according to an investigation by the Ukrainian YouTube channel “Telebachennya Toronto.”

The journalists based their findings on Russian registries, leaked databases, photographs, social media posts, and other open sources.

According to Telebachennya Toronto, Yanukovych is reportedly living at a roughly three-hectare compound called “Blagodat” in Sochi, where he is said to live with his longtime partner, Lyubov Polezhay. Extensive real estate — including tracts of land, Moscow apartments, and several houses — is registered in her name rather than his.

Yanukovych has used documents bearing the name “Oleg Leonov” since 2014, the investigation’s authors say. Leonova, they note, is his mother’s maiden name.

Yanukovych’s son, Oleksandr, lives in Russia with his family under the surname “Sokolov,” according to the investigators. Oleksandr’s wife and Yanukovych’s grandson own extensive real estate holdings and several million dollars in bank accounts.

Yanukovych fled Ukraine for Russia in early 2014.

A Ukrainian court has since convicted Yanukovych in absentia and sentenced him to several lengthy prison terms on charges of treason, illegal border crossing, and illegal seizure of land.
