Russian region urges residents to avoid driving, advises companies to shift to remote work amid fuel shortage
The Novosibirsk region declared a heightened alert on July 8 due to fuel shortages, with local companies advised to shift employees to remote work and cut gasoline consumption, according to a regional government decree.
Residents were also advised to limit personal vehicle travel within the region and beyond its borders until the heightened alert is lifted. No end date has been set.
In the Tomsk region, the government recommended that officials hold meetings online more frequently in response to the fuel crisis, the Russian news agency RIA Tomsk reported, citing Deputy Governor for Administrative Affairs Olga Krylova.
The fuel crisis has spread to nearly every region of Russia. Authorities have imposed limits on gasoline sales and taken various measures to reduce lines and restore order at filling stations, including deploying the Russian National Guard and police to gas stations. The situation is most severe in Zabaykalsky Krai, where drivers reported waiting in line for several days. Tensions are also high in Irkutsk, whose mayor similarly asked the heads of organizations to consider switching to remote work.
