Russia bans diesel exports

Source: Interfax

Russia banned diesel exports starting July 8, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announced at a government meeting chaired by Vladimir Putin.

Novak said Russia would begin importing fuel from other countries in July. “The current situation at gas stations is causing concern among people; to address the challenges at hand and stabilize the situation, the government continues to take additional steps,” he said.

Plans to ban diesel exports had been reported in late May by sources who spoke to Interfax and RBC. One of Interfax’s sources said at the time that a ban was unlikely, since there was enough diesel on the market.

A fuel crisis has been unfolding in Russia since late May, triggered by Ukraine’s sustained strikes on Russian oil refineries. All of the country’s largest refineries have been hit.
