Polish prosecutors said two Belarusian nationals detained in connection with the killing of Russian artist Semyon Skrepetsky in Biala Podlaska were released after investigators found no link between them and the attack.

The detained individuals had no connection to the killing, officials said. They were questioned as witnesses and released. Previous reports indicated that a taxi driver who transported the perpetrators of the attack from Warsaw was among those detained.

Investigators were pursuing several theories but could not discuss them publicly, prosecutors said. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told reporters that all signs pointed to a political assassination, though he cautioned that concrete evidence had yet to surface.

Skrepetsky was shot and killed on June 15 in the city of Biala Podlaska. The shooter remains at large.

Skrepetsky was known for caricatures lampooning Russian and Belarusian officials as well as Russia’s political opposition. His real name was reportedly Robert Kuzovkov, though he never confirmed it.
