Russia’s central bank chief Nabiullina to appear at press conference after nearly two weeks out of public view — she missed the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and a meeting with Putin

Russia’s central bank chair, Elvira Nabiullina, will appear at a press conference on June 19 following a Board of Directors meeting on monetary policy, the bank’s press service announced.

Nabiullina had been absent from public view for nearly two weeks. She missed the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on June 4, a conference of the National Association of Securities Market Participants (NAUFOR) on June 9, and a June 10 meeting with Vladimir Putin at which inflation and the key interest rate were discussed.

The central bank’s press service said Nabiullina had been on sick leave. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said her absence should not be cause for “conspiracy theories,” adding, “People get sick sometimes — there’s nothing unusual about it.”

Elvira Nabiullina’s absence from public view has drawn attention amid speculation that she may soon step down. She is currently serving her third term as head of the Central Bank, which by law is expected to be her last. Her term is set to expire in June 2027.
