Russia’s Defense Ministry says troops delivered nuclear munitions to Belarus as part of exercises

Russia’s Defense Ministry said troops delivered munitions to field positions of a missile brigade in Belarus as part of nuclear exercises.

The ministry released video showing military trucks moving along dirt and forest roads before being unloaded during a thunderstorm, with the final frames showing an Iskander tactical ballistic missile system.

The troops were carrying out “training assignments to receive special munitions,” loading the Iskander-M system with carrier missiles, and “covertly moving to a designated area to prepare for launches,” the ministry said.

Russia had previously announced that its armed forces would conduct exercises on the preparation and use of nuclear forces from May 19 to 21. The drills were designed to practice the joint preparation and use of nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus.

Belarus’s Defense Ministry has been conducting combat exercises for nuclear weapons units since May 18.

Russia had previously announced that it deployed tactical (non-strategic) nuclear weapons in Belarus, which can be used both on the battlefield and for a limited nuclear strike against remote targets. Russia transferred Iskander systems to Belarus, which can serve as carriers for such weapons.
