Russian forces kill 4, injure over 30 in strike on Ukraine’s Poltava region

Russian forces struck the Poltava region with drones and missiles, killing four people and knocking out gas service for nearly 3,500 subscribers, regional military administration head Vitaliy Dyakivnych reported. Direct hits and debris were recorded at two locations in the Poltava district.

The attack damaged an industrial facility and railway infrastructure. Four people were killed and another 31 sustained injuries of varying severity.

Two of the dead were rescue workers, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported. They had arrived at the scene of a fire following the strike on gas infrastructure when Russian forces struck the region again. The other two victims were employees of the targeted facility.

Russian forces also attacked the Kyiv region overnight on May 5. A strike hit a residential area in the Brovary district, injuring two people, the State Emergency Service said. A fire broke out at an industrial facility in the Vyshhorod district as a result of the shelling, injuring one more person.

Russia’s Defense Ministry announced on the evening of May 4 that Russia would declare a ceasefire on May 8 and 9 in honor of Victory Day celebrations. Volodymyr Zelensky responded by announcing a ceasefire set to begin at midnight on May 6.
