Russia’s media regulator demands Apple and Google remove iStories app from their stores

Source: iStories

Russia’s media regulator, Roskomnadzor, has demanded that Apple and Google remove the mobile app of iStories, an independent Russian investigative outlet, from their stores, iStories reported.

Roskomnadzor also demanded that the American companies notify iStories that it must immediately remove content the regulator said was being distributed in violation of Russian law.

“We don’t know exactly what information we are supposed to remove,” the outlet said.

In its letters to Apple and Google, Roskomnadzor said the app was “destabilizing the sociopolitical situation in the Russian Federation” and spreading “fakes.”

In late 2024, Apple removed the RFE/RL Russian service app from its Russian store at Roskomnadzor’s request. The regulator said the app contained materials from an organization whose activities had been deemed undesirable in Russia.
