Russia’s Interior Ministry proposes banning extradition of all foreigners granted asylum in the country
Russia’s Internal Affairs Ministry has proposed legislation that would ban the extradition of any foreigner granted asylum in Russia, regardless of the form that asylum takes.
Under current law, Russia does not extradite foreigners who were granted asylum because they faced persecution at home on the basis of race, nationality, or membership in a recognized social group.
The ministry’s proposal would extend that ban to cover all foreigners with any protected status in Russia: refugee, temporary protection, temporary asylum, or political asylum.
As reported by Current Time, if the proposal is adopted, it would cover foreign hackers as well as former Ukrainian officials and security personnel who have sided with Russia — none of whom could be extradited even if they faced criminal charges at home.
