Report: Armed men in masks break up self-organization festival in Russia

Source: 7x7

Armed men in masks broke up a self-organization festival in the Siberian city of Tyumen on its opening day, the independent Russian media outlet 7×7 reported, citing one of the festival’s participants.

The festival, called “V budushchee vozmut vsekh” (Everyone Will Be Taken to the Future), was scheduled to run April 4 and 5 at the Zoloto+Boloto (Gold+Swamp) Center for Contemporary Art. The security officials arrived about an hour into the first day’s program.

The festival’s social media accounts first announced the cancellation of a live recording of the podcast “Eto Bazis” (This Is the Basis), which was to discuss the future of the labor market, and then announced the cancellation of the entire program. The Telegram channel of the festival venue said part of the April 5 program had been called off due to “circumstances beyond our control,” adding: “Don’t be sad — the future will come regardless.”

The festival had been billed as a “gathering point for local initiatives.” Its program included public talks on regional feminist initiatives, individual responses to the climate crisis, and the future as seen through the lens of street art, among other events.
