A fragment of a drone was found after washing up on a beach in western Latvia, the country’s military reported on Friday.
Latvian Defense Ministry Andris Spruds said the piece came from the tail section of a Russian Gerbera drone, often described as a decoy drone, since Moscow uses them as false targets to “overload” air defense systems.
According to Spruds, the military confirmed that the debris was not explosive. Prime Minister Evika Siliņa said she had instructed the defense and interior ministers to contact their Polish counterparts to determine whether the piece was from one of the drones found in Poland last week.
The Latvian Armed Forces noted that the incident was not especially unusual, saying that “remnants of munitions or fragments of other military objects are regularly found washed ashore.”
