European leaders considering 25-mile buffer zone in Ukraine as part of peace deal — Politico
European leaders are discussing the creation of a 40-kilometer (25-mile) buffer zone along the front line in Ukraine as part of a future ceasefire deal or an element of Ukraine’s post-war security framework, Politico reported on Thursday, citing five European diplomats.
Officials remain divided on how large the zone would be. It’s also unclear whether Ukraine would accept the plan, which would likely involve territorial concessions. The number of troops needed to secure the zone has yet to be determined, with estimates ranging from 4,000 to 60,000, according to Politico’s sources.
Politico noted that the U.S. does not appear to be involved in talks about the buffer zone or its parameters.
