Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday, August 18.
Zelensky made the statement after a phone call with Trump, which he described as “long and substantive.” He said Trump briefed him on the outcome of his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Toward the end of the call, European leaders also joined the discussion.
Zelensky added that Kyiv supports holding a trilateral meeting between the leaders of Ukraine, the United States, and Russia.
Axios journalist Barak Ravid, citing a source, reported that during the call Trump said Putin does not want a temporary ceasefire, preferring instead to reach a comprehensive peace agreement. Trump himself, according to the source, said he generally agreed with Putin’s position on the matter.
In an interview with Fox News after his talks with Putin, Trump said the leaders had made “a lot of progress.” He added that Ukraine must now “make a deal” and that “it’s really up to President Zelensky to get it done.” Trump did not specify the terms of a possible agreement.
