Trump orders two nuclear submarines to ‘appropriate regions’ after Russian Security Council deputy chairman’s ‘foolish and inflammatory statements’
U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to “the appropriate regions” following what he denounced as “foolish and inflammatory statements” by Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev. Trump warned that the move was precautionary, “just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.” The White House has not specified where the submarines will be positioned.
The submarine deployment represents heightened tensions between Washington and Moscow amid their ongoing dispute over the war in Ukraine and U.S. intervention in Iran. Trump has issued an ultimatum to the Kremlin to end its invasion of Ukraine before August 8 or face a new, tougher round of sanctions, including secondary sanctions on Russian oil sales and sectoral sanctions on the banking system.
In an increasingly hostile public exchange on social media, Dmitry Medvedev has hinted at nuclear weapons transfers to Iran and referred to Russia’s ”dead hand” nuclear doctrine — Moscow’s automated “Perimeter” system for managing massive retaliatory nuclear strikes.
Following Trump’s announcement about the submarine deployment, the Moscow Exchange index plunged sharply, reported the news outlet RBC. At the same time, Brent oil prices surged, exceeding $70 per barrel.
