Latvian court overturns decision to revoke TV Rainʼs broadcasting license

A Latvian court has overturned the decision by the countryʼs National Electronic Mass Media Council (NEPLP) to revoke the broadcasting license of the independent Russian-language channel TV Rain.

NEPLP chairman Ivars Āboliņš said the council plans to appeal the ruling. He also stated that TV Rain will not be returning to Latvia.

Latviaʼs public broadcaster LSM noted that a lower court had previously upheld the NEPLPʼs decision to revoke the license.

The regulator stripped TV Rain of its license following a series of incidents, including a December 2022 broadcast in which journalist Alexey Korostelyov said the channel had “helped” Russian soldiers facing difficulties during mobilization. Korostelyov later said his remarks had been taken out of context.
