Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the possible replacement of Ukraine’s ambassador to Washington during their phone call on July 4, Bloomberg reports, citing a source familiar with the situation.
According to the source, the list of potential candidates includes Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko.
Zelensky has reportedly instructed Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry to discuss the next ambassador’s appointment with the U.S. side.
Bloomberg notes that the change comes at a “delicate moment” in U.S.–Ukraine relations, following the Trump administration’s unexpected suspension of certain ammunition shipments to Ukraine last week.
Ukraine’s current ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, is a former finance minister and has served in her current post since February 2021.
